The Role of Written Discourse in Developing EFL Students’ Oral Skill

Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the application of written discourse on the development of English as foreign language students’ oral skill at the Department of Languages and Translation at the University of Tabuk for the academic year 2018/2019. The researcher used written-text and tape-recorded data produced by 12 Saudi English as a foreign language students selected randomly only one non-native speaker (Nigerian nationality) out of the overall number was involved in the study. The data of this qualitative research included written material (4 expository essays drafts) and spoken discourses (taped –recorded workshops). Also, the findings of the study showed that there some characteristics of Adam’s spoken discourse appeared and influenced his written discourse in terms of using informal language and a lack of explicit clarification in which they are characteristics his spoken discourse. This research recommends that further future research be conducted in this field.
