The Pragmatics of Condolence in Slogans and Cards

Abstract

This paper deals with the pragmatics of the expressive speech act of condoling in cards and slogans. This paper aims at investigating how condolers express their condolence using slogans and cards. The condolence cards and slogans were utilized as data for the analysis to investigate how the use of direct and indirect expressive speech act, Grice Maxims of cooperative principles and presupposition are used by condolers when condoling. It is concluded that condolers in expressing their grieve in condolence cards and slogans use the direct and indirect speech act, the Grice Maxims, the politeness strategies and presupposition.
