Flooding and Rural Farming Households in South-South, Nigeria: Implication for Food Security and Livelihood

Abstract

The main aim of the study was to determine the economic impacts of flooding on respondents. A multi-stage sampling technique was adopted in the random selection of 297 respondents. Data were obtained with well-structured questionnaires and analysed using the chi-square test and descriptive statistics. Most respondents have a large household size and were aged. Male headed gender households with a secondary educational level that was well experienced in farming dominated. Most respondents were married with a low annual income of N38,773 ($101.71). Most respondents engaged in crop production and lost their incomes and livelihoods to flooding. The economic impact level of flooding on respondents was severe. The most commonly used mitigation method was sandbagging/floodwalls among other methods. The study recommends that urgent relief measures should be provided by the Government and NGOs. It also recommends that institutional frameworks at government levels should be strengthened and the Federal Ministry of Environment should ensure strict compliance to waste disposal.
