Using Songs to Develop EFL Students’ Productive and Receptive Skills
Abstract
Speaking is a process of sending (producing) messages and ideas for other members of a community, it needs suitable methods to follow and depend on to teach students. As for the listening skills, it is a process of receiving (receptive) messages or ideas. It is as other important skills as, needs methods and techniques to depend on in teaching this crucial skill. It is a fact that a good listener is a good speaker, and. This study is situated so as to measure if using songs effects positively on students' listening and speaking. Population consisted of 50 third grade EFL learners at <em>Al-Q'aqa'a Preparatory School</em> for boys for the period of two months in the first semester 2018/2019. Forty EFL were selected, randomly, and used to serve as a sample of the study. An achievement test was conducted to measure learners’ level in listening and speaking skills before carrying out the study, two months later and after finishing applying the experiment, the same test, under same conditions was retest again and applied on the same sample to measure if there is any difference in the learners’ mean scores due to using the new method that is songs. Results revealed that the experimental group performed and achieved higher scores on the post test compared with the pretest. That is to say, songs enabled learners to develop their, weak, listening and speaking skills through using videos, YouTube, cartoons, etc. Recommendations are provided at the end of this study.
