Speech Acts in English and Arabic Languages
Abstract
This paper sheds light on Austin’s theory of speech acts. It aims to prove that Arab scholars and linguists have studied and analyzed the act of speech much earlier than English peers, and how Austin’s development came after Arab scholar’s contributions. We could consider the Arabic version more mature than the English one by presenting how both versions (English and Arabic) of the theory dealt with terms like situation and context.
