Determining Maize Irrigation Demand in Tanh Linh District of Binh Thuan Province, Vietnam
Abstract
The aim of this study is to determine water use demand (WUD) and net irrigation demand (NID) of maize in the Tanh Linh District of Binh Thuan Province, Vietnam applying the CropWat model. Climate data at Tanh Linh station were obtained from Vietnam Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (VMNRE) for period of 2010-2018 while crop, soil and crop management data were obtained from Agricultural and Rural Development Department (ARDD). Results showed that the actual evapotranspiration (ETc) for three maize planting crops varied from 445.2 to 550.5 mm/dec while the effective rainfall (ER) varied from 41.1 to 416.5 mm/dec. The WUD were 403.8, 142.5 and 94.7 mm/dec, respectively for winter-spring, summer-autumn and autumn-winter planting crops. There is the highest WUD for winter-spring planting crop (3350 m3/ha) and the lowest WUD for autumn-winter plating crop (352.7 m3/ha) while the WUD for summer-autumn planting crop was 962.7 m3/ha. The total net irrigation demand was 334.9 mm for winter-spring crop, 96.3 mm for summer-autumn crop and 132.7 mm for autumn-winter crop.
