Assessment of Sugarcane Yield in the Cu Lao Dung Isles, Soc Trang Province of Vietnam in the Context of Water Scarcity
Abstract
Cu Lao Dung Isles is one of the key planting areas of Soc Trang province in Vietnam with sugercane production up to 6.200 ha. In recent years, this area is facing water shortage due drought and salinization problems, as part of climate variability, leading to the reduce of crop yield as well as causes crop failure. The aim of the study, therefore, is to estimate irrigation wtare requirement (IWR) for sugarcane planting crop using the Aquacrop model based on consideration of related weather factors. Weather data for the period 2000-2015 are applied to predict sugarcane yield in the study area. The model performance was evaluated using the statistical errors such as d index, coefficient of determination (R2) and root mean square error (RMSE). The statistical analyses of the proposed model are acceptable for both biomass and sugarcane yields under water shortage in recent years. Results showed that the sugarcane yield increases when annual rainfall is high and vice versa.
