Enhancing problem-solving and communication competency through a nursing management practicum based on action learning in Korea
Abstract
Aim: This study was designed to apply and evaluate the effect of a nursing management practicum based on action learning (NMP_AL) in nursing students focused on problem-solving competency, communication competency, and student response. Materials and methods: The 51 senior students attended and completed the pre- and the post-intervention evaluation without a control group. Problem-solving competency, communication competency, and student responses to the NMP_AL were measured via self-report questionnaire. Paired t-tests were used to determine significant differences in problem-solving and communication competency. Results: The mean score of problem-solving competency changed significantly after administration of the NMP_AL (t=-3.725, p=.001). Among sub-categories, there were significant changes in the mean scores of divergent thinking (t=-4.180, p<.000), planning (t=-3.510, p=.001), implementation (t=-2.161, p=.036), and evaluation (t=-2.471, p=.017). Also, the mean score of communication competency changed after administration of the NMP_AL (t=-5.078, p<.000). Among sub-categories, there were significant changes in the mean scores of information gathering (t=-3.343, p=.002), listening intently (t=-3.367, p=.001), creative communication (t=-2.590, p=.013), self-presentation (t=-2.140, p=.037), Kim leading communication (t=-2.236, p=.030), and understanding of other’s perspectives (t=-3.380, p=.001). Student responses to the NMP_AL were 4 of 5 possible points on all items. Conclusions: The NMP_AL was found to be effective in improving problem-solving competency and communication competency.
